Many people expect sand to be the chosen media for blasting. However, at Mobile Sandblasting and Restoration we prefer not to use Sand. We are focused on achieving the best clean as well as ensuring we meet environmental standards. We primarily focus on using other forms of media because they offer a far more precise clean as well as an array finishes to suit the project.

Media Blasting requires even more specialised equipment than using sand. A custom blast media pot with an adjustable valve is needed to handle the wide array of different media there are to choose from. The technique requires a lot of experience and training to do effectively, whether it is utilised for cleaning or stripping.

The media used for this type of cleaning can include traditional materials used in sandblasting as well as a wide array of other options. The valve allows the perfect pressure to be chosen to suit the material that is being used. This allows the process to be fine tuned so it delivers the highest quality clean.

There are many type of speciality media to choose from including:

  • Crushed Glass
  • Corn Cob
  • Steel Shot
  • Walnut Shell
  • Garnet
  • Glass Beads

A lot of recycled glass is used for the blasting. The material is ground to particles of various sizes. They can vary in terms of size and coarseness, allowing crushed glass to be used for delicate as well as aggressive applications.

Glass beads are commonly used to blast metals because they provide a fantastic finish, including a uniform profile. The bead sizes vary so again it is possible to choose the right size for the job in question.

Corn cob is a very natural, organic material. The cobs are ground up once the seeds are removed. The end products vary in size and are categorised in grades similar to what you find with sandpaper. Low grade ones are the most aggressive whereas higher ones are more delicate. The media is popular for working with timber and when care needs to be taken to avoid harming vegetation in the area where blasting is taking place.

Steel Shot is spherical grains made from molten steel. The grains are recyclable and create very little waste. It is often used in the automotive and construction industries in order to prepare hard metals.

Walnut Shell is a biodegradable blast media, which is entirely recyclable and causes no damage to the environment if not collected. It is one of the softer medias and excellent for use on delicate projects.

Garnet has very similar properties to sand but offers a major advantage in that it produces much less dust. This makes it a good alternative to sands, even though it is slightly more costly.

Glass beads are commonly used to blast metals because they provide a fantastic finish, including a uniform profile. The bead sizes vary so again it is possible to choose the right size for the job in question.
