What is Sandblasting

Sandblasting occurs naturally all around the world. When winds blow they can pick up sand and fire it at surfaces, leading to erosion. This phenomenon has produced some incredible natural features. Towards the end of the 19th century technology was created that would allow people to harness this power. The sandblasting technique was born and has advanced a long way over the last 100+ years.

Additional equipment is needed to allow sandblasting to take place. Unlike with pressure washing this technique fires abrasive media at the surface to strip the unwanted materials from it. This means that the system needs to handle grainy materials that can vary in shape and diameter. Most systems feature a “contractors pot” that can allow many different types of media to be utilised. Typically traditional grit based ones are favoured.

There are a number of examples of grit media including:

  • Sand
  • Black Beauty

The sand used in sandblasting is typically comprised of river sand. It is available in a range of forms, including different particle sizes. The most common mesh is 16/40. The use of the material has been on the decline for a number of years though as a result of the silica content and safety concerns.

Black Beauty is the name that is commonly given to coal slag. The material is highly regarded in the sandblasting industry because it has fantastic cutting ability, even when working with metals. The downside of the media is that it can generate a great deal of dust when it is used. Again health and safety concerns have seen a reduction in its usage.

Due to the dust that is generated when items are sandblasted it is important that the conditions are very carefully controlled, including ensuring there is suitable ventilation in internal settings. This is important for health and safety reasons. Choosing the right kind of media is also vital. It can help to cut the amount of dust and will ensure the right quality clean is achieved.

At Mobile Sandblasting and Restoration we will choose the right media for each job and ensure it is completed safely and efficiently.
